Colorful Colorado
June 12th 2017 1:00-2:00PM - Southeast Denver: Pioneers to Parks
Cherry Creek’s quiet path through southeast Denver belies its early status as a primary wagon road into downtown Denver. The Four Mile House stands as a remnant of this long ago past. As the city has grown and absorbed much of the former towns and lands on either side of the creek, new vibrancy has appeared in places nearby such as the Cherry Creek Shopping Center and neighborhood. To the west, the popular Washington Park area remains one of the most energetic neighborhoods in southeast Denver. Join Stephen H. Hart Library Director Laura Ruttum Senturia for an exploration of early southeast Denver. Laura is also excited to welcome folks from Denver’s Knotty Tie Company to showcase their collection of original neighborhood-themed accessories, such as the Cherry Creek Herringbone Tie and the Wash Park Toile Scarf.

June 26th 2017 1:00-2:00PM - Pioneers: Four Women Who Changed Colorado’s Artistic Realm
Filmmaker Erika O'Conor explores four unsung Colorado heroes whose lives exemplify the role that women played across the American West in championing an environment of cultural opportunity for all. 'Pioneers' captures the social, racial and gender dynamics of a defining era in American history (1870-1970) through the stories of four Colorado artists. Join us for this extended program as we watch some of this documentary with commentary from Erika O’Conor on what inspired her to create this film and how that was accomplished. Today, their legacies live on through their art, the institutions they built, and in the progressive social fabric of Colorado.

How do museums determine what is worthy of collecting and saving for posterity? Many of the paintings, artifacts, and ephemera found in the collections of our nation’s museums rarely see the light of day. From these vast collections, how do curators determine which works to put on display for the public? Join Jennifer R. Henneman, assistant curator for the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the Denver Art Museum, as she delves into stories related to paintings and sculpture from Backstory: Western American Art in Context. Discover more about the provenance of these works as well as the forethought that went into choosing them for this exhibition.

September 25th 2017 1:00-2:00PM - A Finding the Story: History Colorado’s Collections in Context
We may know the general history of the Stetson cowboy hat, but how do we find the story connected to a particular hat from the History Colorado collection. Researching and reconnecting artifacts and stories can be a challenging task for curators but once the connection is made, a marvelous history unfolds. From a chuckwagonat the Zapata Ranch to a Civil War drum, join Senior Curator of Artifacts Alisa DiGiacomo as she talks about the process of finding the stories behind the art and culture of western expansion through some of History Colorado's artifacts currently on display in our exhibit, Backstory: Western American Art in Context.
